Conclave is what awards season is all about. A prestigious cast at the top of their game with an acclaimed director firing on all cylinders. Edward Berger’s last film, All Quiet on the Western Front, was one of the best movies of 2022, and now he’s back two years later with an even better one.
The Pope is dead and it’s up to a room of cardinals to choose a new one. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with leading the conclave where the cardinals vote until a 2/3 majority is reached. Conclave is ultimately a character study as each cardinal’s ambitions and personal demons are gradually brought to light. But more than that, it’s a stirring portrait of faith in modern times. To be this explicitly Christian without sacrificing artistic integrity is nothing short of a miracle.
