Poll: Ryan Gosling or Russell Crowe?

Jon and Tim shared their thoughts on Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in their review of The Nice Guys. Now it’s your turn. If you had to choose one, who would you rather watch in a movie?

Ryan Gosling may seem like the obvious choice with his character-driven turns in Half-Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, and Drive. But Russell Crowe was once the king of Hollywood with Gladiator, Cinderella Man, and A Beautiful Mind. And of the two, only Crowe has won an Oscar.

Make your choice, and leave a comment to tell us why!

Gosling — especially now. Not to be unkind, but The Nice Guys showed Crowe has pretty much gone to seed. His acting seems to be more of an afterthought. (But boy did I love home in Cinderella Man and A beautiful Mind.)

    • I thought the same thing about Crowe when I watched The Nice Guys, but I wonder how much of that is just him being true to the character. He looks horrible in the movie, but he also gained 63 pounds for the part to look that way. And he’s basically playing a guy who’s coasting through life with no compass. I tend toward Gosling in the head-to-head question too, but that’s just because Gosling has had a much better track record of late. If we’re talking pure acting ability, I think it’s a draw between the two.

Gosling, IF I want to go with the “steady norm”, seemingly swell guy, in both movies and real life. After a few flicks, though, they all begin to seem alike: he’s a hero to the ladies, the plots drip with sentimentalism. Their leaves aren’t far from the “Hallmark tree”. Which is why I vote for Crowe. His adversarial, easily-angered, controversial behavior has certainly jeopardized respect from his peers more than once. However, neither they nor his audience can refute his acting believability and charisma in his many varied films. Thus, when Oscar time rolls around, very few would argue with his deserving the trophies for the movies behind them.

    • If you look at both actor’s filmography, I think you’re right that Crowe ultimately has more range. Gosling is generally the same character in every movie, but he still sucks me in every time.
